Calgary 1988

The design of the torch takes its cue from the Calgary Tower, the building-symbol of the Canadian city. It has a silver top and a wooden handle engraved with ten pictograms representing winter sports. Overland, I traveled a total distance of 11,000 km, going as far as Inuvik, located beyond the Arctic Circle in a -30°C temperature. The torchbearers were selected through a lottery, with the first group ranging from 4 to 100 years old, while the second group included people with disabilities, ethnic minority representatives, athletes, and leaders. The flame was so bright that it could be seen from 15 km away when it reached the cauldron. These Winter Olympics marked Canada's first time hosting the event, introduced freestyle as a demonstration sport, and had the Jamaican team participate in the four-man bobsled competition, creating much excitement.
