Lake Placid 1980

The torch is constructed with a simple design using materials like leather, bronze, and silver that evoke the ancient Greek era as well as the modern United States. Amid a harsh snowstorm, I arrived at the military base in Virginia as my starting point. Following that, 52 torchbearers, an equal mix of men and women representing all 50 states of the nation, took turns carrying me to the Lake Placid venue. There, I was finally set aflame in the Olympic cauldron, which was situated 16 meters above the ground. I found it impressive to be lit in various special locations, including along the path leading to the frozen Mirror Lake where some of the competitions were held. Additionally, the victory of the American field hockey team over their long-standing rivals, the USSR, is another noteworthy moment from the Lake Placid edition of the Olympics.
