Mosca 1980
The torch is crafted using a combination of gold, silver, and steel painted white, with Cyrillic characters in red lettering. The upper part features a golden cup composed of five rings, while the lower section bears the edition's logo, which prominently displays the red star of the Kremlin. During the relay, which covered an approximate distance of 5,000 kilometers over land, I traveled through Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, and eventually arrived in Moscow. There, I was lit in the main cauldron before being divided and sent to Tallinn, Minsk, and Leningrad, where various competitions were taking place. The relay employed a total of 3,000 torchbearers, selected according to 3 criteria: having achieved at least one sporting goal, the ability to run effortlessly for at least one kilometer, and having medical clearance. Notably, the 1980 edition of the Olympics were boycotted by the United States due to the Russian army's invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. One of the memorable moments from this edition was the success of the Italian athletes, particularly Mennea, Simeoni, and Damilano, who won eight gold medals in athletics.
