Sapporo 1972
The Olympic torch boasts a streamlined and lightweight design that closely resembles the Olympic cauldron, a large, gold-dusted, asymmetrical plate. Following standard protocol, I was ignited in Olympia, transported to Athens, and then flown to Japan. During my journey, I was divided into three separate flames and carried across the country by young torchbearers aged 11 to 20 years old. Eventually, a graceful ice skater received me and then passed me on to the final torchbearer, who approached a lengthy staircase painted with red and white hues. At the pinnacle of the staircase, I was ignited in front of an enthusiastic crowd and under the watchful eyes of His Majesty Emperor Hirohito.
