Oslo 1952

One example of an Olympic Games strongly tied to its host location is the edition held in Norway, the birthplace of skiing. My torch, crafted from a brass and steel alloy, features a shiny silver plate engraved with the Olympic rings and the words "Morgedal-Oslo", indicating my journey through the chilly Norwegian landscape. In fact, I was first lit in Morgedal, located in the province of Telemark, at the home of Sondre Nordheim, a true skiing legend from the 19th century. I was then transported to the capital city of Oslo by a group of 94 skiers, in the first relay of the winter editions. As you can see from the video of the Opening Ceremony, I made a grand entrance at the Olympic stadium, witnessed by Princess Ragnhild, who stood in for her father, King Hakon VII, while he attended the funeral of King George VI in England. Fun fact: Did you know that the Oslo Games were the first to use computers to calculate and communicate figure skating scores?
