Turin 2006
The torch was created by designer Pininfarina and received the distinguished Lorenzo il Magnifico award. It took a team of 30 individuals and 18 months to develop, with its design resembling the tip of a ski and the Mole Antonelliana, which is the symbol of the host city. The torch is crafted in such a way that it fully envelops the top, giving the impression that the metal itself is ablaze. The torch relay route traversed many locations in Italy, including Rome and Cortina, before extending into Grenoble and Albertville, Klagenfurt and Ljubljana. The final torchbearer, Stefania Belmondo, led me to the Olympic cauldron, concluding one of the most impressive opening ceremonies in history, showcasing Italian excellence across all disciplines. I distinctly recall Pavarotti's final public performance, where he sang “Vincerò” with his inimitable voice.
