Nagano 1998

The torch for the Nagano Games is designed to resemble traditional Japanese lamps and is shaped like a snowflake with a silver color, which represents winter landscapes. Additionally, the yellow rope on the handle is a nod to Japanese tradition. After arriving in Japan, I was divided into three and traveled to various locations before reaching Nagano, where I lit the main cauldron, which was tilted at a 30-degree angle to be visible throughout the stadium. Other cauldrons were also placed in different locations of the games, as per tradition. To my great pride, the athletes'official uniforms were made from recycled materials. Memorable moments included Deborah Compagnoni winning the giant slalom and Hermann Maier's comeback from a terrifying fall to win two gold medals, both of which are iconic of the Olympic spirit.
