Rome 1960

The torch used for the Rome Games was a departure from the previous four editions, as it was made of burnished aluminum and designed to resemble the monuments of ancient Mediterranean civilizations. Rome had previously been selected to host the 1908 Olympics, but due to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 1906, the Games were relocated to London instead. During my journey to Italy, I stopped at many significant locations of ancient history before entering Rome, where the competitions took place in iconic locations steeped in civilization's history. One memorable moment was the victory of Ethiopian athlete Abebe Bikila in the marathon, who barefoot crossed the finish line under the Arch of Constantine. You should watch the video of his impressive feat!
