Berin 1936
However, it was not until the 1936 Berlin Games that I was transported from Olympia to another country for the first time. The torch used in that event was manufactured by the Krupp factory, which also produced armaments for the Third Reich. When I arrived in Berlin, a jubilant crowd was waiting for me with lots of Nazi soldiers convinced that so-called Aryan superiority would prevail. They were quite disappointed: you should have seen the look on the judges' faces when African American athlete Jesse Owens won four gold medals!
